Jumping for joy, we're almost at Milford Sound!

Three Great Walks in Three Days: The Easy Way to Experience Fiordland

23 Jul 2026

Fiordland is home to some of New Zealand’s most celebrated walking trails, but planning a visit can quickly become complicated.

Which tracks should you choose? How will you reach the remote trailheads? What happens if the weather changes? And how do you include Milford Sound without spending half your holiday organising transport?

The Fiordland Great Walk Package from Trips & Tramps makes it refreshingly easy. Based in Te Anau, this three-day adventure combines guided experiences on the Kepler, Milford and Routeburn Tracks, along with a cruise on Milford Sound.

We organise the guides, transport and essential connections. You simply arrive with your day pack, ready to walk.

Three iconic tracks, one easy package

Walking an entire Great Walk usually takes several days and requires advance hut bookings, food planning, equipment and transport arrangements.

Our package offers a more accessible way to experience Fiordland’s famous trails. Rather than walking each track from end to end, you explore carefully selected day sections that showcase what makes each one special.

Across three days, you will encounter:

  • Alpine landscapes and lake views on the Kepler Track
  • Waterfalls and ancient rainforest on the Milford Track
  • Mountain panoramas and alpine tarns on the Routeburn Track

Each day brings a completely different landscape, while Te Anau remains your comfortable base.

Day one: Experience the Kepler Track

Your adventure begins on the Kepler Track, right on Te Anau’s doorstep, with two options to suit different fitness levels.

The Kepler Heli Hike starts with a scenic helicopter flight into the alpine environment near Luxmore Hut. After exploring above the bush line with your guide, you descend through tussock, native forest and limestone landscapes towards Lake Te Anau, returning by water taxi.

With a substantial downhill section over uneven terrain, this is the more demanding option. It is best suited to active travellers who are comfortable with a longer descent.

Prefer something gentler? The Kepler Jetboat & Hike combines an exciting journey on the Waiau River and Lake Manapōuri with an approximately six-kilometre guided walk through native forest. The mostly flat trail makes this a great choice for families, mixed-ability groups or anyone wanting a more relaxed start.

Day two: Walk the Milford Track and cruise Milford Sound

The Milford Track is often described as one of the world’s finest walks. On day two, you will discover why.

The experience begins with the spectacular journey along the Milford Road. Travelling with a local guide means you can enjoy the scenery without worrying about the driving, road conditions or connections.

At Milford Sound, a water taxi carries you to Sandfly Point, the traditional end of the Milford Track. From here, you walk through towering native forest and alongside the Arthur River towards Giant Gate Falls.

Moss-covered trees, clear water, birdsong and waterfalls capture the atmosphere that makes this track so special. Even rain adds to the experience, bringing the forest to life and creating temporary waterfalls across the surrounding mountains.

Your day also includes a cruise on Milford Sound. Look up at the sheer rock faces and waterfalls, watch for seals and keep an eye out for dolphins or Fiordland crested penguins.

Day three: Climb to Key Summit

Your final day takes you to The Divide for a guided walk on the Routeburn Track.

The trail climbs steadily through silver beech forest before emerging into the alpine environment of Key Summit. From here, you can look across glacier-carved valleys, mountain ranges and alpine tarns.

Your guide will bring the landscape to life with stories about Fiordland’s plants, wildlife, geology and conservation. There is time to pause, take photographs and enjoy being in the mountains without feeling rushed.

The views can be exceptional on a clear day, but Key Summit is not only about the panorama. On a misty day, the forest, tarns and changing mountain atmosphere create their own sense of magic.

Why walk with Trips & Tramps?

Travellers increasingly want meaningful adventures without complicated planning. That is where travelling with an experienced local team makes a real difference.

Trips & Tramps is a family-owned Te Anau business with more than 30 years of experience sharing Fiordland. Our guides understand the tracks, the changeable weather and the local environment. They can introduce you to the plants, birds, conservation work and stories you might otherwise walk straight past.

Our groups are kept small, creating a more personal and flexible experience. Your guide can answer questions, help set a comfortable pace and support you throughout each day.

Most importantly, the logistics are taken care of. Track transport, guides, water taxis, cruise arrangements and helicopter connections where required are brought together in one itinerary.

Is the package right for you?

You do not need to be an elite hiker, but a reasonable level of fitness will help you enjoy three consecutive days of walking.

You should be comfortable walking for several hours on varied and sometimes uneven terrain while carrying a light day pack. The scheduled walks are recommended for travellers aged eight and over.

If you are uncertain which Kepler option is most suitable, talk to our team. We can help you choose based on your walking experience, fitness and preferred level of challenge.
